English Grammar – Pronouns

Pronouns

Pronouns are those words, which are used in place of the nouns. Why do we use pronouns or other words in place of nouns? See the following paragraph:

The Earth is our planet. The Earth revolves around the sun. The Earth takes around 365 days to complete a round around the sun. The Earth is at 3rd place from sun when we see the planets in the solar system. The Earth is bigger than Mars but the Earth is smaller than Jupiter and Saturn.

Now notice that we have used the word “The Earth” 6 times in the paragraph, which looks absurd to use the same name (noun) time and again. But if we use pronouns in place of nouns, it makes more sense. Now see the following paragraph.

The Earth is our planet. It revolves around the sun. It takes around 365 days to complete a round around the sun. It is at 3rd place from sun when we see the planets in the solar system. It is bigger than Mars but it is smaller than Jupiter and Saturn.

So you see that we have used “It” as pronoun in place of the noun “The Earth”.
