Assuming that you have either signed up for a Free WordPress Blog or you have Registered a Domain Name and have installed WordPress on your Hosting Control Panel, and you are all set to start posting at WordPress, we will learn here how to create a post on WordPress.

What are Posts

Posts are the pieces of content in the reverse chronological order, which appear on the front page of your blog. Posts have some distinctive features what separates them from stand Alone Pages:

  • Posts are the pieces of content in the reverse chronological order, which appear on the front page of your blog. It means your front page shows your latest posts. This is the default setting in a blog, which can be changed also and you can get the posts displayed in an order you want. But for continuity, this is the best method to display the latest posts on the front page.
  • Posts have a URL, which, generally is made of the date and time of publishing, or the categories and tags it is associated with.
  • Generally posts are related with a specific topic, which is named as a category or label in a blog, and posts can be classified in this way.
  • For blogs, posts are the main subject matter of the entire web project.

In short, posts are pieces of content, which are published in a certain order.

How to create a post in WordPress

Follow the steps to create a post in WordPress:

  • Log in to your WordPress account, go to your dashboard, and click on the Posts>Add New option.
  • Enter a Post title in the box named ‘enter title here’. Enter an inviting and descriptive title, which should clarify the subject matter of your post.
  • Go to the main content box and type your content. Make sure to double check it for spelling mistakes, headings, alignment, correct spaces, and length of the article and enter related media if required.
  • Select a Post Format, if you are not comfortable with the Post Formats, just select ‘Standard’.
  • Assign Category or Categories to the Post. Try minimizing the Categories for a better organization of your content.
  • Assign Tags to your Post. Tags are post specific keywords, which describes the subject matter of your post and make them searchable.
  • Set a Featured Image if required, it will show up with your post content on the blog.
  • Check the Permalink of the post, which WordPress automatically assigns, when you create a post. If you want to change its format, do that. The best thing is to assign the post title as the Permalink of your post.
  • Click on Preview and preview your post before publishing. If you find that some more editing is required, do that, preview it again and if it looks nice to you, you are all set.
  • Click on Publish.
